My Creative Journey – From Painting to Pottery

Before working with clay, I spent 14 years as an exhibiting artist, exploring the world of paint and creativity. Since 2016, pottery has become my passion, a place to experiment, develop new techniques, and make practical art that’s both beautiful and functional.

Creativity is at the heart of Richard Dobson Pottery. I love playing with new ideas, learning new skills, and helping others discover the joy of making through pottery workshops and classes.

Overcoming Brokenness | Hope in Every Piece

Perhaps you’ve noticed my unusual arm, or heard about my journey with chronic illness. My life changed suddenly during my art foundation course in Swansea when kidney disease struck. Thanks to the incredible gift of kidney transplants from my brother and mum, I was able to continue my studies and earn a Fine Art degree in Newcastle. Despite returning to regular dialysis, I continue to create, fuelled by hope, creativity, and the support of my wonderful wife Lucy and our five children.

Running a small creative business and living with ongoing health challenges has taught me resilience and the importance of hope. I believe we’re all created to be creative, and making pottery gives me a reason to hope, share, and encourage others.

Every Pot Has a Mark and a Message

At Richard Dobson Pottery, every piece carries my maker’s mark, a cross with my initials. This isn’t just a symbol of origin, but a reflection of my Christian faith. It represents my identity in Jesus and the hope I have, even in brokenness. My work is a reminder that beauty, purpose, and hope can shine through our most difficult seasons.
